Yelp Review Answer Guide

Yelp for Business dashboard with a public Comment and Direct message on a review

To answer Yelp reviews you need a claimed page. Use a public Comment for what future diners should see, and Direct message for receipts, refunds, and arguments. You can edit or remove a Comment through the overflow menu. On 4-star and 5-star reviews, Yelp also offers a Thank button. Do not paste the same Comment under every post.

Yelp's owner help on responding to reviews states that a claimed business can leave a public Comment and can send a Direct message. You edit or remove a public Comment from the overflow menu on that Comment. A Thank control exists for 4-star and 5-star reviews. Those mechanics differ from Google's owner reply flow. Google's manage reviews page (https://support.google.com/business/answer/3474050) says Google reviews owner replies for policy, often in about 10 minutes, posts them as the business, notifies the customer, and lets the customer edit after you answer. TripAdvisor allows one management response per review, may take up to two days to post, cannot be edited, and can be deleted and replaced. On Yelp, plan for a public Comment you can later edit, plus a private thread for money. The same manners still apply: no personal data dump, no staff roast, no pay-for-deletion pitch in public.

Do you have to claim the Yelp page before you can reply?

Yes. Unclaimed pages do not give you the owner tools. Claim the listing, finish Yelp's business verification steps, then open the review. The product home for that workflow is the Yelp platform page. Do that before you try to Comment.

If you manage several locations, confirm you are in the correct business account before you Comment. A downtown Comment on a suburban review helps nobody.

What is the difference between a public Comment and a Direct message?

A Comment is the listing. Future customers read it next to the stars. A Direct message is a private thread with that user, when Yelp offers it. Put empathy and a next step in the Comment. Put the ticket, the allergy follow-up, and the refund math in Direct message.

If you dump the whole fight into the Comment, you train shoppers to expect a courtroom. If you leave the Comment empty and only DM, shoppers only see the one-star paragraph.

Composite example, public Comment (not a real business):

"Hi Jordan, I'm sorry the ramen came out cold and that we missed it on the first pass. Please check your Yelp messages so we can make this right. Thank you for writing."

Then use Direct message for the comp.

How do you edit or remove a Yelp Comment?

Use the overflow menu on your Comment. Edit when you typo'd a phone number or when the user added a fair detail. Remove when the whole sentence is wrong, then write a replacement if the review is still visible. Do not edit five times in a day. It looks jumpy.

Google lets you edit owner replies too, and Google notifies the customer when you reply. Yelp's notification behavior is its own product. Write as if the user will see the change. Do not sneak in a guilt trip.

When should you use the Thank button instead of a full Comment?

Thank is for 4-star and 5-star posts when you have nothing useful to add beyond gratitude. A specific Comment is still better when they named a dish or a stylist. "Thank you, we will tell Mei about the curtain bangs" teaches the next client who to request. A silent Thank teaches nothing.

If volume is crushing, Thank the short 5-star "great!" posts and write real Comments on anything with a noun. That split is a time choice, not a ranking formula. Yelp has not been cited here as publishing an owner-comment ranking factor, and this post will not invent one.

How should you answer to an angry Yelp review?

Same public-versus-private split as how to answer to angry customers online. Name the miss. Lower the temperature. Invite the DM. Do not litigate the bill in the Comment. Yelp regulars read owner Comments the way they read menus: they skim for whether you are decent.

Do not accuse them of being a competitor. Do not post their table number. Do not ask them to remove the review in exchange for dessert. Google's merchant incentive rules are Google-specific, and buying a takedown is still a bad look on Yelp.

How is Yelp different from Google and TripAdvisor for replies?

Google: verified owner, Reply, policy review of the owner reply, posts as the business, customer notified, customer can edit after, you can edit or delete your reply. TripAdvisor: one management response, up to two days, no edit, delete and resubmit. Yelp: claimed page, Comment plus Direct message, edit/remove Comment via overflow, Thank on 4-5 stars.

Write shorter on Yelp than you might on a hotel TripAdvisor essay. Yelp Comments that read like press releases get skipped. Two to six sentences is enough for most misses. The writing habits in how to answer to Google reviews still transfer: name, detail, next step. The buttons change.

What should you never put in a Yelp Comment?

The same list as what not to say when answering to a negative review: accusations, personal data, staff blame, deletion asks, perfect-record claims, sarcasm, keyword stuffing. Yelp users screenshot owner Comments. A roast of "the new guy" will outlive the shift.

Do not paste a wall of other 5-star quotes as a rebuttal. That is off-topic and thin-skinned.

Should you answer to every Yelp review?

If the thread is public, a Comment (or a Thank on a tiny 5-star) is the professional default. Skipping only 1-star posts looks selective. If you need a framework for coverage, should you answer to every Google review is the same operational question on another logo.

Filtered or not-recommended reviews on Yelp may not show the same way as recommended ones. Comment on what customers actually see on the live page you care about. Do not spend the afternoon arguing with Yelp about a filter in the public Comment.

Can you use the same sentences on Google and Yelp?

You can reuse the miss and the apology. Retune the last line. On Yelp, point to Direct message if you will continue there. On Google, give a phone or email because Google is not Yelp DM. On TripAdvisor, write the last line as if you cannot edit.

BoltReply is a Chrome extension that drafts replies inside Google, Yelp, and TripAdvisor in about 5 seconds. Change the call-to-action to match the platform before you post. Extra phrasing to rewrite: Google review answer examples and the AI review answer generator, still with a human pass.

What if the Yelp reviewer updates the review after you Comment?

Re-read your Comment. Edit it if the stars or the facts moved. If they went from 2 stars to 5 after a remake, your long apology may now feel stuck. Shorten it and thank them for coming back. If they piled on, keep the public Comment decent and continue in Direct message.

How should multi-location restaurants handle Yelp replies?

Each location page needs its own Comment with that kitchen's fact. A brand account that thanks someone for "the waterfront patio" at an inland diner is a tell. Give community managers a skeleton, not a locked paragraph. The person who can comp the bowl should approve 1-star Comments.

Does a good Yelp Comment fix a low star rating?

No. The stars stay until the user changes them. A Comment can limit the damage for the next reader and can open a private fix. That is the whole prize. Chasing a star change in the Comment is how you write a deletion ask. Skip it.

What if Yelp filters a review you already Commented on?

Recommended and not-recommended views can differ. Comment on the version customers see on the live page you care about. If a review drops out of the recommended list, do not chase it in a public argument about Yelp's filter. Keep your energy on visible 1-star posts and on Direct messages that can still fix the visit.

Can you post the same Comment on two Yelp locations?

No. Each page needs that kitchen's fact. A shared paragraph that thanks someone for patio heaters at a windowless lunch counter is a tell. Give managers a skeleton: name, miss, DM invite. The person who can comp the bowl should still rewrite the noun.

Should you Thank a 5-star Yelp review and also leave a Comment?

If they named a dish or a person, write the Comment. Thank alone is for the one-word great posts. Two public gestures on the same rave are not required. One specific sentence that names the lasagna is enough for the next diner.

Claim the page if you have not, then write a public Comment on your oldest visible 1-star Yelp review with one named miss and an invitation to Direct message. Send the DM the same hour with the ticket, not with a speech.
